Barnet Brick Terrace
Situated in Barnet, North London, the Barnet Brick Terrace transforms the front garden of a 1930s house into a seamless integration of functionality and visual charm, utilising the site's natural contours. The client’s brief emphasised a cost-effective solution that does not compromise on quality or visual appeal, and this project exemplifies that vision.
The terrace showcases a striking contrast between the rich, black clay bricks and the lighter porcelain tiles used for the steps, creating a visually dynamic space. The porcelain tiles not only enhance the modern look but also contribute to the spacious feel of the half landing, creating an inviting podium area.
The project faced significant challenges, including extensive excavation of the land and the need for robust support and reinforcement of the retaining walls. These engineering considerations were meticulously addressed to ensure durability and stability while maintaining the project's overall design quality.
To enhance the design, R Core Architects incorporated planters into the stepped contours of the black brick walls, seamlessly integrating greenery into the landscape. Additionally, integrated lighting was thoughtfully designed into the brick walls, illuminating the steps at night and creating a warm, inviting ambiance.
